November 12, 2024 School Board Meeting - Supt. Summary
The Board meeting last night lasted roughly an hour. The following is a summary of the meeting.
The new bus barn facility was discussed. The need was identified to build a bus barn on the district owned 30 acres near the hospital. The need stems from the inadequate space we currently have and that buses are sitting outside due to the lack of space. Once a new bus barn is erected that can house all the buses, the existing one would be renovated to accommodate wrestling as well as spring sports practices. The board has directed Supt. Klasna to advertise for bids and to report back to the board in December.
A community member spoke during public comment and would like the board to consider naming the HS Gym floor after Paul Barta who was a coach for several years in Columbus. No action was taken as this was presented on public comment. This may be an agenda item for consideration at the December meeting.
Policy #8426 Therapy Animal Policy, passed second reading. This policy defines the use of therapy animals in the school.
The Therapy Dog Handbook was approved. This handbook coincides with policy #8426. It was expressed by Supt. Klasna that the use of a therapy animal does not take priority over any staff members job duties with kids. The handbook is new and is a working document that is subject to change as needed.
The Weight Room Policy #4330P died due to a lack of a second to the motion. There are changes that will be considered and this policy will be placed on the December agenda for approval.
Student Directory Information Notification form 3600F2 was approved. This form is for families who decide to opt out from releasing directory information. This is a form that goes with Policy 3600 and needs to be updated to conform to the most current version of the law.
Mr. Brenden Beckett was approved by the board to be added to the sub teacher list.
The board approved a pole barn to be built on the 30 acres to house the two activity buses. This structure would be 30x60' and would not be insulated or heated. This pole barn would house the new Freightliner activity bus as well as the Prevost activity bus. Supt. Klasna presented two bids to the board, one from Cleary and one from MQS. The board approved the Cleary bid of $78,789.
Activities Director, Ron Osborne, gave a fall activities summary as well as projected participant numbers for winter activities.
Principals Mr. Morse, Mr. Kurtz, and Mr. Browning gave their building reports.
Supt. Klasna gave a report on board policy review, accreditation, and the formation of a school safety committee. In terms of board policy review, a date and time needs to be decided for the second policy review. A school safety committee was established and their first meeting is Tuesday, November 19th. A summary of accreditation was given. It is basically the report card for the school in terms of proper staffing, instructional hours, Indian Education For All, etc.
Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, December 10th at 7pm.
